Support For IT – How We Do itJanuary 2, 2018
Ransomware Strikes AgainJanuary 9, 2018
Well we can’t start 2018 off by having a security breach, now can we? By now you may have heard of the infamous Meltdown and Spectre flaws in the Intel processors. Some of you may be wondering if this affects you in any way. If you have any sort of Intel processor in your environment, then yes…you are affected.
How Meltdown Works
Independent researchers have found that malicious software can view the information stored in the operating system kernel while it’s transmitting the information to the CPU. The information contained here can contain sensitive data (usernames, passwords, credit card information, etc).
What To Do
Luckily, developers at Microsoft, Mozilla, and Google have been quick to remediate the situation by releasing new patches which can help workaround this flaw. Unfortunately, this is only a workaround for the time being. The flaw would still reside within the processors.
Microsoft has also released a statement stating that the patch can cause performance issues once installed. This is something to definitely keep an eye on! In addition to this, there have been reports that the patch may not be compatible with certain anti-virus product suites. We expect that the developers of security products will release new versions in the upcoming days, or weeks.
What is Affected
This will affect all devices which have an Intel processor. Servers, laptops, desktops, virtual servers and virtual hosts.
As a rule of thumb, keeping your environment up to date with the latest security patches will assist in mitigating exploitation of these flaws. Talk to us today if you don’t have a patch management strategy in place!
